Review: Changeling Moon by Dani Harper

Review:

I picked up this book for a new take on weres and I was surprised to find Dani's Changeling's were well worth the read. It was refreshing to see that Dani brings in a female pack leader for the Changelings in her debut book. Although this book is based on a different member of the pack, the leader and her mate were a fun couple to get to know too. This book is about Connor, who is a veterinarian Changeling. I found myself wrapped up in this story. From the first page, Dani mixes suspense and adventure for her characters. Although you meet many different people, each one is distinct and unforgettable. The heroine of the book Zoey is strong willed and snappy. I like her right away. She does things her way and sometimes the reader worries for her. The antagonist in the story is a bit creepy and he does some horrible acts,but the reader keeps hoping for a happy ending. Conner and Zoey have a intense attraction that can go from steamy to mellow,it keeps the page turning. The are some twists in the story which will leave the reader wanting more and glad to know there will be additions soon to this new series.

Save The School of Gallantry!

My Dearest Readers,

When I was in high school, I had a dream. I was going to be the next Stephen King. Heh. Yeah.

Stay with me. Please. I knew my ideas were fabulous and I knew all it would take is for an editor to look at it and they would offer me up the moon and the stars and best of all, a contract. I had my girlfriends read everything I wrote. And they kept telling me, “This is fabulous! It's SO funny! Hilarious!” Seeing it really wasn't supposed to BE funny, I immediately changed course realizing I actually had a better handle on being funny than scary. I also figured adding a romance into it would even make it better since that is what I loved to read.

I then entered college as an English major. I was going to be teacher and write during the summers. Even then I was a smart girl who knew I wasn't going to make jack and that I needed a job to support the “creative” one. Throughout all of college I wrote historical romances. One right after another. And kept submitting. And submitting. And submitting. And kept getting rejected and rejected and rejected. In the meantime, I got married. I had two kids. I joined RWA. I got critique partners. I did honed and honed and honed the crap out of my writing. And kept writing and getting rejected. I eventually racked up over 200 rejections and had written over 40 books in those 11 years of trying to get published.

When I finally sold my first historical romance, MISTRESS OF PLEASURE, and my second book, LORD OF PLEASURE, I was beside myself. It didn't feel real. To FINALLY arrive at a destination I had been traveling toward for 11 long years seemed like a mirage. Which fortunately, I quickly snapped out of. Because after all, most of my friends are all published and unpublished writers and the stories they all have told me throughout the years made me realize

I had to fight with fists up for myself every step of the way. I knew publishers did little to no promotion for their authors, so I spearheaded my own promo, ready to be more than just an author. And even though I was budgeting very well and spending countless hours networking and promoting on websites and blogs, doing tons for free, I still ended up spending $7,000 on my first book. Which was way more than my advance. But hey, every business starts in the red. Right?

Then the reviews started coming in about my series set in 1830 London England about a school that educates men on the topic of love and seduction. People loved it! Wow. It got nominated for awards. Wow. Readers are e-mailing me raving. Wow. Readers from France, Austria, Poland, South Africa and from all over the U.S and the world. Wow. It just kept getting better and better. I was beginning to feel as if every penny I spent was all worth it (even though my family and I weren't going on any vacations and were eating out of cans). Because all that mattered was that my publisher loved me and my readers loved my series.

Come contract time, I'm ready for whatever they wanna throw at me. Or so I thought. Mistress of Pleasure, though completely sold out and unavailable anywhere (unless it's a used copy, some going for a ridiculous amount of $40.00), hadn't done as well as my publisher had hoped. So without waiting for the second book to come out to see if the series was even worth saving, I get a rejection from my own editor citing lack of sales.

I have to say this rejection felt more personal than any of the other two hundred and some rejections I'd received. Because it was no longer “Your book isn't good enough” it became “Your sales aren't good enough.” Since when is an author supposed to be a market guru AND a fabulous writer? Eck.

I love this series. The men in it make me laugh and it broke my heart to think that my readers will never get a chance to read about Lord Brayton, my glorious male virgin. The only alpha virgin I ever plan to write about. Then I realized something, why I am letting a publisher decide what is worth holding on to? Shouldn't that be a reader's job?

Ah. Herein lies the purpose of my post. I am challenging everyone, be they readers or writers to help me do something that's never been done before. Save a series from a death sentence given by a publisher. Can it be done? Who knows. But I eat challenges for breakfast and I hope you do to. Please join me in saving my series. Blood, Fire, and Pillars of Smoke: The Rise of Vampires in Pop Culture

As popular themes go, vampires may very well win the prize of "most commonly resurrected." You may love them, hate them, or are trying very hard to ignore them, but surely you have wondered at least once what made the damned princes of darkness so bloody interesting.If you prefer "real world" storylines and are observing the phenomenon as a baffled bystander, you might be interested to know that thousands of years before achieving mass popularity in movies such as Underworld and Twilight, and TV series like True Blood, vampires had manifested in pagan mythology, monotheistic demonology, and spiritual rituals.

Throughout history, vampire myths appeared in nearly every culture. From the ancient Middle East (Mesopotamia, Judea, Egypt), these archetypical baddies invaded Europe, where they found fertile soil in Slavic paganism, and also materialized in Africa, Asia, and the Aztec Empire.

Curiously, the earliest vampires were females -- violent dark goddesses like the Sumerian Lilitu, the Egyptian Sekhmet, and the Indian Kali, all possessing immense supernatural forces. These vampiric goddesses had both the powers to create and to destroy, to give birth and to devour.

In the Dark Ages, tales of vampires sparked public hysteria. Corpses were exhumed and stabbed. It had taken the vampire various reincarnations, through the Hebrew Talmud, Arabian Nights, Boccaccio's Il Decameron, and eclectic poetry to reemerge as the suave ageless nobleman.

This 19th century "makeover" was a direct outcome of the violent volcanic eruption in Indonesia in 1815. The Judgment Day atmosphere caused by dark skies and a frosty summer inspired Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, as well as plays and operas starring the alluring vampire lord.

From this point on, the revenants' star was on the rise and shining ever so brightly with each literary, musical, or theatrical piece conceived (oftentimes as a result of consuming laudanum) in their honor. Lord Byron, Edgar Allen Poe, and Alexandre Dumas, to name a few, contributed to their eternal fame, but it was the Irish novelist Bram Stoker's Draculathat had the mightiest impact on the imagination and cast the glory of the bloodthirsty count and his court in perpetuity.

Evidently the public's fascination with vampires is not an original fad. The vampire is the most popular fiction character of all times. What is it about vampires exactly that appeals to so many people? And why, being familiar with this totally fictitious half-man, half-monster icon, people are still happy to spend their time on movies, books, and TV series that feature vampires?

Entertainment and escapism come to mind. As much as we are riveted by "real world" plots, sometimes the brain needs to zone out in fantasyland. This explanation is plausible, but it fails to prove why the vampire in particular outperforms any other fantastical creature.We should keep in mind that the vampire has only recently assumed the role of the compelling, gothic, martyred, seductive, gorgeous, off-limits, struggling, sympathetic, romantic outcast in love with a human. The slick hunk in black leather pants, driving a sports car in a metropolis by night, was not the bloodcurdling image that had haunted the graveyards of our ancestors.

Granted, the spooky effect has value. Sexologists believe that scary moments stimulate the libido and therefore couples may bond effectively having watched a horror movie together. However, while this theory is bound to stick in your memory, it does not offer sufficient evidence, either.Vampires, whether pale and beautiful or ghoulishly foul, have always been identified with death, blood-drinking, and sex, feeding on emotions such as love, guilt, dread, desire, pity, and sadism.

Far be it from me to undertake psychoanalyzing why we are obsessed with death, blood, and sex. In my capacity as a historical novelist, I choose to explore the mysteries of the human psyche through stories in the hopes of understanding why we were put on this earth and how we may improve our lot in life. Ironically, as I study the tapestry of man's fleeting existence, I see how the fruits of one generation's labor -- art, science, architecture, etc. -- are reaped by its successors.Now, a vampire -- omnipotent, never-aging, and immortal -- may travel the centuries unscathed, unconstrained by a deadline in his pursuit of enlightenment and happiness. Would he or she be a cheerful voyager or one cursed with loneliness? Then there is the future to consider. What if the world and/or mankind are doomed to a cataclysmic end? Would anyone care to witness that?

Vampire symbolism is tied in heavily with the awareness of the powers of darkness, chaos, and the occult -- ancient mysteries that add a chilling dimension to the rich layers of history and cast a question mark on the future. Doomsday prophecies made for an absorbing read as I was doing research back in 2007 for Royal Blood, my Tudor Vampires novel. Here's an example:

"Awake, ye drunkards, and weep . . . For a nation is come up upon my land, strong, and without number, whose teeth are the teeth of a lion . . . Sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the Lord cometh, for it is nigh at hand . . . And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the Lord come."– Book of Joel

The vampire -- a human lookalike possessed of superior abilities, as well as frailties, dependent on man for sustenance, multifaceted and obscure -- remains an enigmatic figure. Friend or foe? Through him, we get to experience latent fancies and scenes in which the secrets of creation are unraveled. Thank heavens for fiction, I say. The world, I predict, has not seen the last of the vampire crazes. The undead are here to stay, our prolific imagination will undoubtedly continue to produce them, and even the most discriminating realist may yet cross over to the dark side.

How everyone's weekend going?
It's been so hot this weekend. I've been trying to work on my paper for class and find something cool for the kids to do. We currently don't have any grass in our yards, so sprinkler fun in the mud was out of the question. We opted for slip n slidin' in the driveway. We blew up two long pool floaties and put them under the slip n slide so the girls had something soft to slide on. (Sorry, no pictures. I didn't bring out the camera.) They had fun and drying off was easy with the heat.
I did my reading for class though and had a little time to read some of Fairyville by Emma Holly. It's a pretty interesting book( Warning: it's classic Emma Holly over eighteen writing)I'm at the part where the heroine's high school sweetheart has come back into town and she's a little torn with feelings from her past and her feelings toward a love interest in the present.....And the plot thickens :)
I updated the blog. I wanted to add a comment box so that we can chat here and there. I downloaded a couple comment boxes that had too much extra workings. I did find one that I hope works for me. Technically, its a guestbook widget but it works great for a comment box.(Thank you Smartgb!) I had to customize it a little to fit it into my side bar. Quirks Passed Down From Mom

Mother's Day is this weekend and I received an email from The Parent Bloggers Network to do a blog blast post about Hand-Me-Downs from Mom. I'm going to tell you a few quirks my mom handed down to me.

I have a few fears from my mom. I remember going on family vacations when I was growing up. One year we went the Grand Canyon and my mom did not want us kids to go to close to the edges. She did this for our safety and because mom is afraid of heights. I thought it was funny when we would have to hold mom's hand when walking on a bridge or waiting in line for a roller coaster.

I too have her fear of heights. If someone asked me to go hiking up a hill, I'd kindly decline the offer. I'll walk on bridges, but I have to stay toward the inner part of the walk way. My heart sometimes speeds up when I have to climb the ladder to change a light bulb.

Another fear I have that mom passed down is of scary movies. My mom told me that when I was little we would go to the drive-ins and watch scary movies. When a scary part came on, she would jump or scream then put a blanket in front of me so I couldn't see the scary part. My husband laughs at me when I say I want to watch a scary movie with him and bring a pillow with me when we watch. When the suspense music comes on I grab the pillow and look towards him instead of watching the scary part.

My worst handed down fear is the fear of spiders. My mom came down for a visit a few months ago and we were watching a show that had spiders in it. There was a part where a spider jumped onto some one's hand on the show and both my mom and I jumped in our seats.

I've got to love my mom. She is the sweetest woman I know even with her funny fear that have been handed down to me.

This past year has been an adventure to say the least. I managed to do book research with a bunch of Harley riders and their dogs – without falling off a bike once (at least not while the bikes were moving). Then I met a building inspector for the city of Henderson, Nevada, who took me down into the bowels of the Hoover Dam to research the second Accidental Demon Slayer book, The Dangerous Book for Demon Slayers (you can win a copy here). And then, of course, The Accidental Demon Slayer hit the New York Times bestseller list, prompting me to utter the words “Get out!” over and over to my agent before making her email me to make sure I wasn’t phone hallucinating.

They say you’re only as good as your next book, though and I have to tell you I’m really excited about this next one. Lizzie and the gang are going to Las Vegas to confront a she-demon who has her eye on world domination – and worse, Lizzie’s man. It’s chock full of biker witches, smart aleck fairies and steamy romance.

Plus, I love quirky research and The Dangerous Book for Demon Slayers gave me an excuse to do it. The climax of this book takes place inside the Hoover Dam, and of course in order to write about it, it was necessary (and fun) to talk my way into some behind-the-scenes places. An engineer took me far down into the inspection tunnels they used in the 1930’s and 40’s, when the cement was still curing. It was amazing to see the notes these inspectors made on the walls, to hear the stories of those that didn’t quite make it out and to walk the same old metal steps that they did. All of that made it into The Dangerous Book for Demon Slayers, along with lots of things I had a blast making up (this is fiction after all).

Why does a new hair dryer have a twelve-page how-to manual, but when it comes to ancient demon-fighting hocus-pocus, my biker witch granny gives me just half a dozen switch stars and a rah-rah speech? Oh, and a talking terrier, but that’s another story. It’s not like my job as a preschool teacher prepared me for this kind of thing.

So I’ve decided to write my own manual, The Dangerous Book for Demon Slayers, because no one tells me anything. Dimitri, my “protector,” may be one stud of a shape-shifting griffin, but he always thinks he can handle everything by himself. Only he’s no match for the soul-stealing succubi taking over Las Vegas. If I can’t figure out how to save him—and Sin City—there’ll be hell to pay.

Moving Madness

I know I've been a MIA blogger. I didn't realize how much moving can take out of a person. We've been in California for a little over a month now and the days have been pretty busy. The new house is nice(even with all the boxes stacked everywhere) The girls all have their own rooms now and are putting their own personal touches to them. (They still end up sleeping in one room by morning though) Me and the DH have our days around dropping off and picking the girls from school.(There is overflow in the school district and the girls had to be separated into different schools) It was worrisome at first but they've all made friends and like the schools and teachers. Hopefully next school year they can get into the same school.
I've been trying to look for a job. It's been seven years since my last job and filling out applications has been an interesting process. :) I squeeze in some leisure reading through out the week. It's whatever book is close to me at the moment. I have the Charmed anthology in one room, Must Love Black by Kelly McClymer in another room and Up in Smoke by Katie MacAlister in another. I miss the blog chatting. Once things settle down, my blogs won't be so sporadic.

Five people and or things that inspire you:Inspiration is different than support and love, which I get from my wonderful husband and family. So, people and or things that inspire me are:

1. Libraries. During my childhood, I was a feral inhabitant of the local library, searching for sustenance and amusement, and usually finding it. A little curiosity and you can find out all sorts of things that your parents and other adults don’t tell you!

2. Authors whose books stand the test of time. The classics are not just read because of the authors’ great craft, but because they touch us on a deep emotional level.

3. My son. I saw the world and myself in a new way once I had the responsibility of being a parent.

4. All the funny people, the ones who make you laugh and cope with life’s trials. Some of my favorite comic authors are P.G. Wodehouse, Mark Twain, Jane Austen, and John Kennedy Toole. But I’m also a fan of comedy from Mel Brooks to Judd Apatow’s series to the throw-away lines in “Buffy, the Vampire Slayer” to Kathy Griffin’s stand-up. I love old romantic comedies like “The Philadelphia Story” and “The Thin Man” movies, and I love the newer ones, too, like “Bridget Jones’s Diary” and “The Holiday.”

5. My teachers, who introduced me to literature and to ways of thinking about the world through literature.

Five of your favorite authors:

I always list the same top authors, so I’m going to name some of my favorite novels by other authors.

The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde is a booklover’s dream filled with lit references, bonkers humor, and a crazy parallel universe where art rules.

Aunt Julia and the Script Writer by Mario Vargas Llosa is a wild comedy full of eccentric characters and romance. In this beautifully written page-turner, the characters and the situations get progressively more out-of-control, and I read non-stop to the end.

Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Prachett is a devilishly fun story of good vs. evil. The Antichrist is born to a nice suburban couple and a book-loving angel must stop Armageddon.

Middlemarch by George Elliot is a substantial book and well worth the effort. Dorothea Brooke is a bright young woman who wants to do something useful with her life. She makes the mistake of marrying an older man because she thinks she can help him with his “important work.” This is a complex and completely engrossing tale where the small personal issues of love intersect with large social issues.

Men in Black by Scott Spencer. Every book by Spencer is terrific, but this darkly comic tale of a writer’s life falling apart is my favorite. Spencer’s hapless protagonist makes terrible mistakes, but it’s still easy to empathize with him, especially as he struggles to connect with his son.

Describe five of your heroes/heroines through your eyes:

I don’t write heroes or heroines because I don’t find perfect people very interesting. I always suspect that they lack the imagination to screw-up. So I’ll describe my favorite flawed characters instead.

Milagro de Los Santos is a smart, funny, often impulsive young woman with a degree from Fancy University (F.U.). She writes political horror stories that no one wants to read and yearns to be a “sincere and serious” person, despite the fact that she loves silliness. She falls in with a family of snobby vampires and finds the home she’s always wanted.

Oswald Grant is the “fabulous man” who introduces Milagro to his family. She thinks she’s fallen for yet another quirky slacker, but Oswald’s actually a plastic surgeon. He plays along with her misunderstanding for fun. He’s warm, affectionate, accomplished, but he has to work all the time to succeed. And he’s constantly stressed by his sense of duty toward Milagro and his family.

Edna Grant is the snarky, sharp-edged grandmother of the vampire clan. She always has a clever insult and men worship her. Despite her stand-offish exterior, she warms up to Milagro and becomes a strong maternal figure for her.

Ian Ducharme tells Milagro that he’s nicknamed “the Dark Lord” because his family owns some dank and boggy property in Europe. He’s not the handsomest of men, but he’s the most commanding in any room. He’s a little too smooth to be trusted, but he’s very seductive, exciting and has a sense of humor.

Nancy Carrington-Chambers is Milagro’s best friend from F.U. She answers to Milagro’s silly side and makes an art of mangling the English language. Nancy’s full of style and fashion opinions and she’s great fun, even while struggling a little to be a good wife to her boring husband.

The four seasons, but especially fall and all the lovely colors and smells. It’s my favorite time of year!

Other books/movies/television shows, etc. Anytime I read or watch something, I think about the story and characters, what I liked or didn’t about them, and what I might have done differently. It’s a great, fun way to get your own creative juices flowing.

My mom. She’s the strongest person I know. I love making her laugh, and I try to bring that humor to my books to make other folks laugh too.

Food. I’m addicted to the Food Network, and I love writing about food. I always try to make it a small but delicious part of anything I write.

The outdoors/weather. There’s nothing I love better than a gray, rainy day or overlooking a scenic vista. I always try to take pictures of every new place I go to provide inspiration for future books/settings.

Bella Bulluci: She’s the star of my September release, Jinx. Bella’s a fashion designer by day, although she dreams of being a more traditional artist. She’s very quiet and restrained and elegant, but she can also be incredibly strong when the situation calls for it.

Debonair: He’s Bella’s hero. He has something of a split personality and can be very sexy one minute and very shy the next. He’s the ultimate nice guy wrapped up in a bad-boy package.

Gin Blanco: She’s the heroine of a new urban fantasy series I’m working on. The first book is titled Gin on the Rocks. Gin’s an assassin who runs a barbecue restaurant called the Pork Pit. She’s one tough cookie. She’s probably the strongest character (both physically and emotionally) that I’ve ever written. It took me a long time to get her voice just right, but now, she’s one of my favorite characters.

Carmen Cole: Carmen was the star of my first book, Karma Girl, and she’ll always hold a special place in my heart. She’s always plucky and determined no matter the odds against her. She makes mistakes, but she always owns up to them and tries to do better.

Fiona Fine: Fiona was the star of my second book, Hot Mama. Fiona is bold and daring and full of life. She was a lot of fun to write, especially since she can eat whatever she want and wears such interesting clothes!

Five reasons to read your books:

They’re fun, sexy fantasies.

No wimpy heroines are allowed.

Having superpowers would be cool.

The male superheroes fill out their leather and spandex costumes very nicely. :grin:

Mini-Review: Archeron by Sherrilyn Kenyon

I was so afraid to read this book. To this Dark-Hunter fan, Archeron is untouchable. Yet, I've spent the last two day immersed in this book. The first part of Archeron's book is heart wrenching. He goes through so much during his early years that I wanted to reach into the book and hug the man.

The second part is set in the present and I'm happy with the heroine chosen for Archeron. She is someone we met before in a previous book but didn't really notice her. She jumps off the pages with her personality.

Sherrilyn did an awesome job with Archeron's story. I don't know how how she's going to top this one, but I'm looking forward to what she's got in store for us next.

Always writing

That's definitely everything about me in five words or phrases.

Five people and or things that inspire you:

1. My mother, who wrote and painted and filled our family with creativity, spontaneity, and instilled in us a boldness and eagerness to take the next step.

2. Art: any great story, painting, sculpture. I often get the I-should-be-writing urge halfway through reading a good book, and I either have to stop and write, or hold it off to finish reading. Sometimes it tough.

3. My own kids. Like any parent with teenage kids in today's world, you realize how different things are, how much more capable they are--in many ways--than we were growing up. I'm looking over at my teenage daughter...conference call going on the landline, texting on the cell, TV's on--one hand on the remote--and she's downloading music videos through TiVo, Stephenie Meyer's Breaking Dawn is open with at least one eye scanning the lines (easy, because she's already read it twice), earbuds in one end, jacked into an iPod on the other, and her other hand's on the keyboard keying in lyrics on her wiki page to a song she's writing with friends in the four open chat windows. Kids today...man, they're freakishly sharp and imaginative and seem to know more about the world than I did at their age.

4. The sea, the sound of the surf, the cry of gulls, the silence under the waves. Not sure I could live without that, not for long anyway. If I'm ever shipped off to another world, it needs to be an ocean world.

5. Last, I'd say myself. Art, and maybe any creative endeavor, has a reciprocal or circular inspirational effect on the creator. I re-read chapters when I write not just to get back into a particular storyline's groove, but also to feel good about writing and completing them, and I use that as fuel for more chapters. My painting works the same way.

Morgan Dostoevsky

Describe five of your heroes/heroines through your eyes:
There are a couple ways to take this one, including real or imagined heroes who have had some influence on my life, or the heroes/heroines who appear as characters I've developed in my books and stories. I'm going with the latter:

Kassandra is--by far--my all time favorite character. She's fierce, thoughtful, not always sympathetic, has way too many problems for one person to deal with, but manages to get through every day with them--while fending off small armies of assassins and planning the downfall of her murdering grandfather.

Corina Lairsey - She's tough, witty, and having experienced more than a few bad relationships first hand, might just be equipped to handle something a little deeper and more controlling.

Michael Henderson - the observant outsider with a science background, a former science teacher, marine biologist, who welcomed the Seaborn curse, and now lives under the sea.

Kallixene - Kassandra's paternal grandmother has orchestrated the rise of an exiled Seaborn Great House, and had hand in Kassandra's development and rise to power.

Nicole Garcia - One of Kassandra's two sisters, the one with high grades, artistic ability, and political ambitions.

Five reasons to read your books:

Seaborn is one of those books that after I finished reading it, I still want more. Chris's dubut has your imagination on overdrive. Seaborn is filled with action, suspense,devotion and a bit of horror.

The main characters are memorable.Kassandra comes off as untouchable,physically and mentally. I was a bit scared of her at first, until I saw where her loyalties lied. I think of her as an underwater amazon warrior.

Aleximor is a passionate and scary character. He's one of those people you like but a part of you knows you shouldn't.

Corina has a strong will . Even though Aleximor has taken over her body,she plays a big role throughout the book. I wanted to fight with her.

Seaborn takes the reader on a non-stop above and below the sea adventure.It follows many different story lines that come together at all the right times. The fast-paced chapters will have you up all night not wanting to miss what is going happen next. You'll go from reading Aleximor/Corina's journey from the Pacific to the Atlantic to reading Kassandra's internal and external battles toward becoming the warrior and leader she is meant to be. Chris's details in this debut are remarkable. I was amazed at the gory detail of how Aleximor recruits his army of the dead and reading what it takes for a surfacer to become Seaborn. Ivy stepped toward her cousin, preparing to heal her, but a figure caught her eye. It raced in the shadow of the pyramid, hugging the stone sides. She caught an impression of a masculine shoulders, dark hair, but the figure moved so quickly, Ivy barely saw it, barely smelled its odd scent. Still she knew--he was her foe.

The need to hunt down the hunter warred with the need to heal her cousin--but only for a heartbeat. Hunting could wait. Her cousin could not.

Standing as still as the massive structure beneath them, Ivy concentrated on her root chakra, imagining its sexual power. Emeralds and rubies glinted through Ivy's mind; the flavor of ferns and Mexican green chilies danced over Ivy's tongue as she gently rested her horn on her cousin's skinless shoulder.

Tchili's recovery didn't take long. Skin erupted over the raw muscle, covering sinew and tendon. Milky white fuzz spread over the skin, then grew in full and thick. The bloody stump of Tchili's tail regained a lawn of emerald hair, then the hair grew long and flowing, like pampas grass. Her mane grew back too, as green as the moss beneath them. Streaks of sumac red shot through her mane and tail, giving her almost the appearance of normality. Almost.

Tchili's forehead remained stubbornly shorn, the bloody stump the only indication of Tchili's true nature.

My horn, Tchili moaned in faint mindspeak.

Oh, honey. I haven't even tried to heal that yet, but don't worry--you won't die. Not from this.

As she prepared to heal Tchili's horn, the wind shifted, bringing the smell of the hunter. He was running, slinking into the surrounding jungle. Ivy would leave him until she was finished here. He couldn't go far. She pulled power from the Heart.

But she as she started to weave its energy, the wind shifted again. It brought his true odor--raw and unmasked now. And his smell scared her.

He bore the irresistible fragrance of a virgin.

Alex -- He's tall and slender, basically good natured with a tendency towards silliness, with silvery grey eyes.
Libby -- She has unnatural, neon blue eyes, the mark of the Merlin Stone she keeps. She has auburn hair, and a sweet face. She is frightened, but determined despite it, scarred by her past but willing to learn from it rather than hide from it.
Zorovin -- A dragon in human form, he can be fierce and hard, but his edges are softened by the humanity forced upon him.
William -- He used to be a man of the sea, and despite his stubborn, plunge forward nature, he's well meaning and sensible, even a tiny bit romantic. As Tasmin says, you can't accuse a man who opens a Chocolate shop of a lack of imagination.
Tasmin -- Tasmin is practical, genteel, a bit too straightforward. She is trained in herbs and some other magics, and can be fiercely loyal.

Tasmin, William’s wife to be, was chosen by a spell, as all wives and husbands are chosen. It’s a nice, tidy way to find a reasonable mate for almost everyone. Unfortunately, Tasmin is from the North, a place of magic and strange ritual, and William is from the South, where people pride themselves on being above the kind of insanity practiced by the Northerners, which has nothing to do with the fact that most people in the South have lost their ability to practice magic.
William doesn’t seem in a hurry to send for Tasmin, for which none of his family blame him. After all, she’s a barbarian. She, on the other hand, would like to know what’s keeping him. When he’s framed for murdering his patron, Tasmin takes matters into her own hands, harnessing the wind to bring her to William’s side. She’s gotten to know Wiliam from his letters. He’s not a murderer and she’s going to help him prove it.
William, incarcerated for a crime he didn’t commit is shunned by his family for the embarrassment, and for giving up the family shipping business for foolishness, and for saddling them with a Hag for a wife, which means he can’t protect Tasmin from his family’s cold dislike of his barbiaran wife-to-be–but that’s not the worst of it.
Someone out there doesn’t like him and is begining to dislike Tasmin almost as much, and that someone isn’t at all averse to making sure William and Tasmin aren’t around long enough to celebrate their wedding.
Tasmin, of course, has other plans.

You'll understand the title of this post once you read Michele Bardsley's newest installment in the Broken Heart series, " Because You're Vampire Said So" (WARNING: SLIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THOSE WHO STILL NEED TO START THIS SERIES) In this book, we get to read more about the ancients and their powers. We get to know Broken Heart Mom Patsy, a mom who figures out her purpose in life the hard way. Patsy is destined for greatness and reading her story had me cheering(ok..maybe yelling at the book a bit) for her to make the right decisions. My favorite secondary characters are Dottie and Nonna, those two ladies are a laugh a minute. After meeting these two,I had the movie "Over Her Dead Body" stuck in my head :D. This mom's adventure is hilarious at times and heart-wrenching at others.
