Fantastic Fives on Debut Author Selena Illyria

Bio:
Dear Reader,
In a man's letters his soul lies naked.- Samuel Johnson

I/R Author, Selena Illyria was born with need to write and an over active imagination. She loves to write stories featuring futuristic cities that can only be imagined, visit island kingdoms of vampire/dragons, giggle with mischievous pixies, peek in on faeries looking for their mates, check in on the naughty staff of an exclusive academy, and sigh over how in love a powerful business exec is with his wife. She can't wait to write stories with her talented, creative and wonderful CPs Celia Kyle and Shara Cooper. And when she's not writing, she loves to read many different genres of books. She also loves to watch some of her favorite movies (too many to be named) and televisions shows. She also, loves to listen to some of her favorite musical artists. All of these things help inspire her to write. She does believe in the quote above. She does believe that part of writing does bare a part of the soul.

If you'd like to know more about her, you, can visit the following places:
Website: www.selenaillyria.com
Blog: www.selenaillyriasthoughts.blogspot.com
My Space Page: www.myspace.com/selenaillyria
Selena Illyria Contributes to: www.pinkchairdiaries.com
You Can Email her at: selenaillyria826@gmail.com

So, reader, now that you've been told you a bit about her. Can she tempt you dear reader? Can she seduce you into her world and show you a bit of her soul? And if you'd like, you can show her a bit of yours. Do we have deal? Please ignore the wicked gleam in her eye, it was trick of the light. *smile*

Excerpt:
Standing right next to her was the most gorgeous man she had ever seen. He had to be at least 6' 9", with long ash blond hair in a braid down his back. His features were chiseled. She could see earrings in a variety of feathers and hoops along his ear. He turned toward her and smiled. His lips were sensuous and full, and he showed off a row of bright white teeth. He reached over and brushed back a strand of her hair.
"You're welcome. I'm Lucian Sandros."
He had hooded pale, ice green eyes and for the first time she noticed he had a faint tan. How did he tan? He was a vampire right? she wondered. He leaned forward and she inhaled the scent of pine.
"I like the sun just like anyone else."
His breath tickled her ear and she shivered.
"You read my mind."
She cursed herself for sounding so breathless.
"Are you asking or telling me I read your mind? And yes, if you're asking."
She jerked back. "Don't do that, get out of my mind."
"Nevada, interesting name."
"I said get out of my mind."
"Sorry, I just wanted to know your name."
"You could have asked."
She turned back toward the bar, picked up her drink and took a sip. He leaned forward, brushing back her hair over her shoulder.
He leaned forward whispering in her ear again.
"Would you have told me if I asked?"
"Maybe."

Black Silk by Sharon Page (March 25,2008)

I couldn't find the description, but look at this cover. HELLO, IS IT HOT IN HERE?

April 1, 2008 from Harlequin Spice Briefs.

When bad times come knocking, all Carinna wants is escape. All Carinna wants is her scorchingly sexy best-friend Jack. Jack is hot for it too--sex with Carinna, that is--but dare he give in, knowing it could mean the end of their lifelong friendship?

Rogue by Rachel Vincent (April 1,2008)

I know that better than most. Since rejoining the Pride, I've made big decisions and even bigger mistakes: the kind paid for with innocent lives. As the first and only female enforcer, I have plenty to prove to my father, the Pride and myself. And with murdered toms turning up in our territory, I'm working harder than ever, though I always find the energy for a little after-hours recreation with Marc, my partner both on and off duty.
But not all my mistakes are behind me. We're beginning to suspect that the dead are connected to a rash of missing human women and that they can all be laid at my feet—two or four, take your pick. And one horrible indiscretion may yet cost me more than I can bear.…

Personal Demons by Stacia Kane (April 1,2008)

Megan promises listeners to her new radio call-in show that she'll "slay their personal demons," and they believe her. So do the personal demons... although she doesn't know it, Megan is the only human without a demon on her shoulder! Megan and her allies - a demon lover who both protects and seduces her with devilish intensity, a witch with poor social skills, and three cockney guard demons - have to deal not only with the personal demons, but a soul-sucker, ghosts of Megan's past, and a reporter who threatens to destroy Megan's career!

First in a delightfully irreverent new series-and second to none when it comes to beautiful 227-year-old career women. Being dead isn't all it's cracked up to be. Take it from Francesca Marinelli, trapped underground for over 200 years and rediscovered during the renovation of a Victorian mansion in historic St. Augustine. A tourist attraction herself, she's well suited for a job as an Old Ghost Town Tour guide. Francesca's due for a new lease on afterlife-and with enough sunblock, she can finally live it. Unfortunately, everything she learned about men is a little dated. And when people in her tour group turn up dead, naturally the police suspect her. After all, she is a vampire. Which is why a crazed vampire-hunting vigilante squad is out to get her as well. Between the dead bodies, the stalkers, and a seriously non-existent love life, she's starting to wish she was dead. Or at least buried, where she was safe.

Please Welcome Kit Fox

I guess all cartoonists, at least the ones I've read about, say that they can't remember a time when they didn't draw. I wish I could say something a little more original, but that really is the case. There were always cartoons in my life, since before I knew how to write. My family were devout readers of Bill Watterson's brilliant Calvin & Hobbes, I was always encouraged to be creative, and, most importantly, my older sister draws. She was, and still is, ten times better than myself, which always spurred me on and taught me how to improve myself.

My comic strip is called Snap Crackle Pop and it is, though it seems egocentric, about myself. They say all writers make a character that resembles them, so why beat around the bush? My father always said my work was funniest when I just wrote what I knew about. Snap Crackle Pop is a cartoon about myself, and within this cartoon, I draw a cartoon about myself.

It's set in a ridiculous sort of world where inanimate objects talk, a goldfish is a zen counselor, a flying pig arrives to scold me out of having a love life, and a little slithery dragon appoints himself my personal bad influence. I invent the perfect male but reject him twice out of commitment phobia, get spied on by Dick Cheney, harassed by giant spiders, and plagued by dozens of inner demons. And all those things are true, too.

I update my comic every Wednesday, and you can find it at my website, http://www.kit-fox.com/. The site is brand new, so there are still comics to be added to it, but the rest you can find at my Deviant Art site here: http://elephantblue.deviantart.com/

I hope you enjoy reading!

-Kit
www.kit-fox.com

This is the photo of the first step I take in making a cartoon, the basic frame.

2nd Step-This is the sketch of the strip, all done in pencil.

3rd Step-After the pencil, I ink it with black Micron pens to get all my lines exactly how I want them.

4th Step-This is what it looks like when it's all done, the pencil marks erased, the larger black areas shaded in, and whatever mistakes I made while inking cleared up.

Please Welcome Renee George

In my life there have been two consistents, other than my husband and child: writing and art. I'm all about the creative right brain, truly, it wins out over the logical left side 90% of the time! (Much to my families' chagrin). Which is why, even though I have degree in nursing, I've been working full time as an author and cover artist for the past four years.

My art is a way for me to achieve instant gratification because I get to "see" the characters unfold before my eyes. Not to say that a lot of what I do doesn't hit the scrap pile, it does! But the art that comes together for me, well, I just get such a sense of satisfaction and pleasure. I can't even begin to describe how good it feels.

I've been doing cover art since 2001, and have worked for Changeling Press as a cover artist since December 2005. I love working with authors to create an image that represents their fiction in such a way they can be happy with the result. Also, bonus! I get to do my own covers for my books, which is awesome.

In the past I've worked with pen and ink, water colors, and photography to do covers, but in the last several years I've incorporated CGI programs along with the magic of Adobe Photo Shop and Paint Shop Pro to do the majority of my art. The direction of what I do is always with the goal of learning more, and getting better and better at my craft.

I draw inspiration from everything around me and anything my brain can think of that I consider beautiful. Funny enough, not everyone is going to find beauty where I find it. LOL. But, I try. It's a personal aesthetic.

Thank you again, Danette! And here's some images that I've done recently. I hope you all enjoy!

Hugs,
Renee George

Celebrating St.Paddy's Day With My First Male Author Spotlight

THE OUTPOST (available @Red Rose Publishing)
by J.H. Bográn

Mainstream: Sci Fi
ISBN: 978-1-60435-048-7
Release: February 28th, 2008

BLURB

Karl Jackson and Joseph Doyle are stationed aboard Track 7, an outpost monitoring the traffic in and out of the solar system. When Karl wakes up with his nose pressed against a metal plank, he soon realizes that the lack of gravity is only the beginning of his problems.

EXCERPT:

"Joe, my space suit is not working properly. I'm getting dizzy. Which is the fastest way to the door?" said Karl into his radio.Joe Dyles' voice came after a second, "Right on, partner. Let me see….Okay, turn to your left and go as fast as you can. I'm heading down to the chamber to help you get in."Karl followed his partner's direction but found himself facing the rear of a thruster. He saw a gleam of pure white light growing into a flame right in the center of the hollow exhaust. An invisible forced pressed his chest hurling him away from the station.Confused and dizzy, he tried desperately to grab one of the handles but he was a millisecond too late: the station was whirling away!

END OF EXCERPT

J.H.'s Sci-Fi Inspiration

I'm a big sci-fi fan. The first movie I remember walking into a theater was, well you guessed it, Star Wars. Later called "A new hope" by those in the know. I was six at the time.

By the way, although I don't qualify as a card-carrying Trekie, I do love the show and films. Hell I even know what the "T." stands for in Cpt. James T. Kirk!

To me, Sci-Fi does not necessarily mean laser guns. I see the genre more about the sophisticated technology that we half expect/ half hope to reach in the future.

I feel more comfortable wearing the "thriller author" hat, but this time around I went after a sci-fi setting. The Outpost is a sci-fi short. It started with the horrendous title of "Deep Space, Deep Trouble" that I prepared for a writing curse. My classmates all loved the conflict and the unexpected twist in the end.

It only has two characters, Karl Jackson and Joe Doyle. They are stationed in orbit around the edge of the Solar System, then we have conflict as they have to fight a mal-functioning station (No, there is no HAL 9000 mainframe computer behind it).

Spotlight Review: Personal Demons by Stacia Kane

Personal Demons
By Stacia Kane
Juno Books
April 1, 2008
ISBN-10: 0809572559
ISBN-13: 978-0809572557

When psychological counselor Megan Chase promises listeners to her new radio call-in show she'll slay their personal demons, they believe her. So do the personal demons. Megan doesn't know she's the only human alive without a personal demon on her shoulder. This, coupled with her psychic abilities, makes her a valuable weapon for any demon mob-like "family" lucky enough to gain her allegiance. It also makes her a serious threat not just to the personal demons, but to a soul-sucking Legion of Hell known as The Accuser. The Accuser already has an old score to settle with Megan, and sees this as the perfect time to do it. But Megan isn't without allies as she's plunged back into a world she forgot existed. A member of a competing demon family sees Megan as his ticket to power, and sets about both protecting and seducing her with devilish intensity. Can Megan, her new demon lover, a witch with poor social skills, and three cockney guard demons named Malleus, Maleficarum, and Spud defeat not only The Accuser, the personal demons, and the ghosts of Megan's past, but the reporter who threatens to destroy Megan's career as well?

I received an ARC a few days ago and could not stop reading once I started it. I'm a bit of a virgin at writing reviews,so please bare with me. I wanted to add parts of the book in the review, but wasn't sure if I could do that with a book that hasn't hit the shelves yet. So here is my review on Personal Demons......

Personal Demons is an exciting new addition to the urban fantasy/paranormal romance genre. Its action packed, humorous and suspenseful. There were parts where I was looking over my shoulder to make sure no one was lurking behind me. The heroine and hero were slightly reluctant when it came to their hearts, but even their kisses heated up the pages. Megan Chase is a psychic/psychologist that will get into your head to solve the problem. Since this book is written in first person, it was easy to feel Megan's experiences in the book.Greyson Dante is a hot demon who is unforgettable. He has a bit of alpha male in him,but its hard not to like his lighter side. Even the secondary characters were memorable. My favorites were the Cockney Bodyguard Brothers, they had me cracking up the way they “watched over” Megan day and night. Hopefully Stacia has them in future books. This book will have you thinking about your own personal demons and wanting more from Stacia Kane.

Extra!Extra! Stacia's has a contest going on and it's not too late to enter ! Put the book on your Amazon Wishlist (and YES, Chapters wishlists/orders count too, same with B&N.com.) Pre-order it! Tag it! Talk about it! For more on the contest go HERE(Check the March 3, 2008 Post)

Fantastic Fives on Shelley Munro

Five words and/or phrases that describe you:

Shy
Optimistic
Determined (hubby might say stubborn)
Quirky
Loyal

Five People or things that inspire you:

Travel
Nature
Reading other author’s books
My husband
Chocolate

Five of your favorite authors:

Nora Roberts/JD Robb
Lora Leigh
Janet Evanovich
Jim Butcher
Keri Arthur

Describe five of your heroes/heroines through your eyes:

Janaya from Talking Dogs, Aliens and Purple People Eaters is an alien with attitude, a highly trained bodyguard who is initially resistant to change because she thinks it will change the life path she needs to succeed. Life on a foreign planet, amongst strangers isn’t what she wants until she meets Luke and makes friends on Earth.
Emily from Scarlet Woman is quirky and determined to change her life, especially after her first husband dies. She’s loyal, fun and anchors the Mitchell brothers and their partners into a tight-knit family group.
Alice from Fancy Free is thrown into a situation where she’s out-of-her depth. She equates money with security but gradually learns that security is more than a dollar amount. It's great friends who will stand by you no matter.
Lane from Playing to Win comes across as arrogant and bossy at first, using his fame to make things happen. This is really a shield to protect him from the users who follow him and want to coast in his fame. When he meets Kate and her son, he opens up and is loyal, loving and protective.
Dillon from Last Wish isn’t really looking for love but when he sees Zane he knows what he wants and goes after it. Determined, he’s not letting Zane get away and when Zane is in danger, he’s willing to do anything to protect the man he loves, even if it’s at his own expense.

Five reasons to read your books:

They’re set in exotic places.
They have alpha heroes.
They have quirky heroines who are emotionally strong and give the heroes a run for their money.
They often have humor in them, so they’re the perfect read after a hard day at work.
They’re hot and spicy reads.

A courier exchange gone wrong has sent Mack Hernandez into a whirlwind of chaos. Torn from the family he tried to save and thrust into Spaceport Adana, he does what he can to survive. An incredible encounter… or two… with a bounty hunter has him walking a fine line between life and death.
What starts out as a struggle for freedom between the two sends them careening headfirst into a cover-up big enough to blow the Haze patrol sector apart.
When the heat turns on and the adrenaline rides high, can they keep their hearts strong and steady?

Meet Debut Author Caitlin Kittredge

Caitlin Kittredge is the author of the Nocturne City series, her debut novel NIGHT LIFE has just been released.

Here is Caitlin's Fantastic Fives

Five words and/or phrases that describe you:

Ambitious,

wordy,

enthused,

erudite,

crazy.

Five people and or things that inspire you:

My mom, who raised me as a single parent AND homeschooled me.

Really great writing in any genre.

My friends and their triumphs.

Music, especially live music.

Pretty pictures of my favorite actors (especially Christian Bale or David Tennant. Yumm.)

Five of your favorite authors:

Neil Gaiman
Robin McKinley
Raymond Chandler
H.P. Lovecraft
Warren Ellis

Describe five of your heroes/heroines through your eyes:

Luna Wilder, of NIGHT LIFE: A smart, strong, emotionally flawed homicide detective who's also a werewolf.
Dmitri Sandovsky of NIGHT LIFE: A werewolf pack leader, a criminal but a staunch family man and protector of those he loves. A walking paradox in many ways.
Petunia Caldecott of 'Newlydeads': A sensible detective inspector from London who happens to be one of the few who can commune with the Old Gods. Also has a penchant for curries, loud music and the musicians who play it.
Jack Winter of 'Newlydeads': Aging punk rocker has-been, talented mage when he can bother to take the time, tattooed, bleached and devilish, with a good heart under all of the scars.
Dee McNamara, from a WIP, DEATH WISH: A clairvoyant who was saddled far too young with responsibility for her unstable brother, with a survivor's mind and a stage magician's reflexes. Dee isn't a good person, but she's the best one she can be, considering her nomadic life.

Five reasons to read your books:

Snappy dialogue.

Heroines who are smart and real, and hopefully never TSTL.

Exotic locales both real and fictional.

Terrifying alternate history involving Lovecraftian monsters and dead Irish gods.

And hot guys. Of course.

New Releases to Look Out For

Grimspace by Ann Aguirre

By all accounts, Sirantha Jax should have burned out years ago…As the carrier of a rare gene, Jax has the ability to jump ships through grimspace—a talent which cuts into her life expectancy, but makes her a highly prized navigator for the Corp. But then the ship she’s navigating crash-lands, and she’s accused of killing everyone on board. It’s hard for Jax to defend herself: she has no memory of the crash.
Now imprisoned and the subject of a ruthless interrogation, Jax is on the verge of madness. Then a mysterious man breaks into her cell, offering her freedom—for a price. March needs Jax to help his small band of rogue fighters break the Corp monopoly on interstellar travel—and establish a new breed of jumper.
Jax is only good at one thing—grimspace—and it will eventually kill her. So she may as well have some fun in the meantime…

Extra! I got to say I loved this book. I posted a review on Amazon, go check it out here

Seattle. One minute you're drinking a vanilla breve, the next, some creepy old dude is breathing on you, turning you into a zombie. And that's just for starters. Now, the recently deceased Amanda Feral is trying to make her way through Seattle's undead scene with style (mortuary-grade makeup, six-inch stilettos, Balenciaga handbag on sale) while satisfying her craving for human flesh (Don't judge. And no, not like chicken.) and decent vodkatinis.
Making her way through a dangerous world of cloud-doped bloodsuckers, reapers, horny and horned devils, werewolves, celebrities, and PR-obsessed shapeshifters--not to mention an extremely hot bartender named Ricardo--isn't easy. And the minute one of Amanda's undead friends disappears after texting the word, "help" (The undead--so dramatic!) she knows the afterlife is about to get really ugly.
Something sinister is at hand. Someone or something is hellbent on turning Seattle's undead underworld into a place of true terror. And this time, Amanda may meet a fate a lot worse than death...

A New Diary Snipet From Fancy Free

A snippet from Alicia’s collection of condom notes:

Practitioners of German folk medicine considered lavender, parsley, and marjoram potent contraceptives. People thought teas brewed from the seeds of fruitless trees had contraceptive qualities and that women who drank the tea would be childless too. Popular opinion held that willow bark tea acted as a contraceptive and made women sterile. Seeds from wildflowers like Queen Anne’s lace—which really is a potent contraceptive—were also popular oral contraceptives. The odor of camphor taken via the nostrils was thought to castrate men. Camphor is actually a natural aphrodisiac.
